Air quality monitoring in museums for the preservation of works of art

Home » Sectors » Air quality monitoring in museums for the preservation of works of art

Museums, archives, art galleries and libraries are spaces that require a preventive strategy for the conservation of works of art and cultural assets. At ENVIRA we have designed a solution to monitor the air quality in museums (including exhibition rooms and warehouses) and buildings of cultural interest in order to protect works of art against fungal (mold) and bacterial contamination, discoloration or corrosion.

The indoor air quality of exhibition rooms must be monitored so that factors such as temperature, humidity or atmospheric pollutants do not deteriorate the works of art. The developed solution can help the museum management to make better decisions regarding the number of air renewals per hour or the ventilation flow, taking into account human comfort, the nature and the state of conservation of the exhibited material.

Indoor Air quality monitor for museums Nanoenvi IAQ

The solution for the preventive maintenance of the air quality to minimise the risk of deterioration of the collections consists of:

  1. Wireless sensor network
  2. IoT platform for using the data collected to generate alerts and notifications in the event of events that could pose a risk.
* 3G/4G connectivity provided by a complementary device.

Continuous monitoring

We have developed an intelligent monitoring system to measure indoor air quality. This solution allows us to know in real time the potential presence of hazardous substances in the museum spaces and, based on the data collected, to develop improvement strategies that can have a positive impact both on the comfort of workers and visitors in buildings of cultural interest and on the conservation of works of art and cultural heritage.

The monitoring system developed includes sensors for:

The monitoring system developed includes sensors for:

  • CO2
  • CO
  • VOC (volatile compounds)
  • PM particles 1, 2.5. 4 and 10)
  • Temperature.
  • Relative humidity.
  • Pressure
  • Level of noise.

The microprocessor sends the data to a server in the cloud at planned intervals, its communication being through Wifi and the MQTT protocol.

Communication modules

The following technologies are currently approved by ENVIRA (the 3G and 4G solution is provided by a complementary device):

Data display and analysis

The data collected by the sensors are transmitted to the Envira DS platform for handling data, where you can, receive and store data from the sensors in the local database or in the cloud, manage the users and warnings and draw reports

The analysis of air quality in the exhibition rooms and the storerooms of museums and cultural buildings gives as a result:

  • The preservation of the collections in the best conditions possible.
  • Avoiding corrosion and the appearance of mold.
  • Reducing the pollution agents.
  • Creating an indoor climate that is constant and controlled all the year.
  • A comfortable climate for the public.
  • An efficient energy system.
  • Analyzing how the number of visitors influences the air quality of the exhibition rooms.
  • Defining strategies for the preventive preservation of art collections and cultural goods.
  • Making decisions about the number of air changes per hour or the flow of ventilation n museums.

Warning systems

The monitoring solution for museums, archives, art galleries and libraries allows you to configure alerts based on the contaminants and critical factors of the works to be preserved.

If one of the monitored parameters exceeds the pre-defined limit, an alert is sent by SMS or email to the person responsible, who can then act to correct the problem.

Advantages

Open solution, integrable with external developments at any level (device, connectivity, CLOUD or user application).

An unlimited number of devices can be included in future extensions.

High-reliable and available data in real time.

Tailored system.

Creation of data history.
